Robert Sherman uses a story from the Bible to explore the emotion of making a difficult choice. Abraham had to make a painful decision. If he followed God’s command, he would have to give up what he loved most on earth. In the painting we see Abraham gathering wood, preparing to sacrifice his beloved son. The pathos of this moment is captured in Abraham’s face. But the golden sky seems to foretell of the joy he will later feel. He passed God’s test of his devotion, and in the end Abraham did not have to carry out the sacrifice.
